Christianity and Vegetarianism

submitted by lkshep
Being a devout Christian, I was eager to find information on vegetarianism that was supported by my religion. I feel that my reasons for being vegetarian are stemmed from my upbringing in a loving Christian home. I recently found some great resources that focus on vegetarianism and Christianity. This post is only for awareness and sharing some great information; it is not at all supposed to put down others or discriminate against other religions. This is just something I feel is worth sharing to the vegetarian community!

The Christian Vegetarian Association is a great organization that advocates a vegetarian diet based on Christianity principles of love. There values seem to be so true on why one should be vegetarian:

for health

for animals

for reasons dealing with the poor and hungry

for being caretakers of the earth

About the Christian Vegetarian Association:

The Christian Vegetarian Association (CVA) is an international, non-denominational ministry of believers dedicated to respectfully promoting healthy, Christ-centered and God-honoring living among Christians.

We advocate nutritious plant-based diets in the global Christian community. Through publications, websites, and related public information campaigns, we educate people about the distinct health, environmental, and animal-related advantages of plant-based eating.

And here is a wonderful article on "Christianity and Vegetarianism."

http://www.jesusveg.com/christiantext.html

This article sums up many reasons on why many Christians choose to be vegetarian (similar to the Christian Vegetarian Association reasons)

for peace and nonviolence

to help end world hunger

to help protect the environment

for health

to support human rights

Everytime an omnivore asks why you are vegetarian, or if you get enough protein, or if you eat enough, etc, refer them to this article!

Finally, another great resource is:

Most religions base their values in compassion and humanity. But sometimes it is hard to believe that some of the most active religion advocates think that God has given humans the right to do whatever they wish with God's creations, just because humans are the "chosen" species. Part of the reason is because they are not aware of what is happening.

Although I'm not a Christian, I do believe in God and appreciate this piece. I believe in peace & reverence for life. ^^

I can understand why there are so few Christian vegetarians since Jesus ate fish... and that dream from God to Peter in the book of Acts. Here's a convincing 3 part series blog from a well known pastor on why he is a vegetarian. He doesn't look down on non-vegetarians or "shove it in their face" but simply explains his own personal convictions.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with HTML, so I can't post links... you'll have to copy & paste.

Thanks, Yvette! I think it's about time I start learning HTML! See that, lkshep? Let people click on the links, rather than cut & paste & more people are likely to check it out. Applies to me, anyway... but I did visit the sites you posted. I'll take a closer look later, as the articles are a bit long. Thanks for the references!

ge, don't worry about learning HTML. I will add in a "add link" feature in the comments section sometime this weekend. :)

Thanks, Ironman. I had major problems with my computer and had to wipe everything out. Forgot the name of this website and was searching for hours trying to find it again. FINALLY found it through a link someone posted on another vegan website. Cool site, dude.

:) I am glad that you were able to find Vegtaste. And sorry I didn't get a chance this weekend to implement the "add link" feature for I was out of town. Hopefully I will get some free time soon.

Thanks for checking back.
